It was  just a little case of petty theft.  It took four days to listen to the case and reach a verdict.

As soon as I was excused from court for the day, I drove directly to my district Cognitively Guided Instruction training!  So far, we have learned about the first 6 problem types. According to the trainer, each grade should be the focusing on each type . For example, kindergarten focuses on "add to, result unknown" and "take from, result unknown."

This story is called Six Hogs on a Scooter. Six hogs are trying to get to the opera in this story.  They make several failed attempts to get there.  This story is great for reviewing parts of a story! It is available from Amazon.

Have you heard of this website? It is "Storyline Online."  It has celebrities reading stories.  This site would be perfect for your "listen to reading" Daily 5 center. I think you'll love it.

This is a buzzer app I got free in the app store called "Free Buzzer." I have used it to play games in 2 teams. Students get a question and have to buzz in, give the correct answer and get points.  You could use this as you wish!

I love this cute book.  I discovered it when a second grade reading buddy shared it with one of my kinders.

Zero tries to get respect from the other numbers.

Then they realize his math powers and become afraid of him.

When the Roman Numerals capture the numbers Zero gets his chance to be a Hero!

Students are playing with juggling scarves.  These are great for P.E or burning off extra energy.

I used the book Corduroy and his lost button to teach subtraction. Students are taking the "lost" buttons off their Corduroy bear.

Snowmen at Night: A Verb Lesson

Here is an anchor chart of verbs we made using the book Snowmen at Night.

This is the perfect book for introducing verbs.

As you can see the snowmen are very active at night.  There are plenty of verbs to come up with!

After reading the book, I introduced the term verb and gave the gesture and definition using this Whole Brain Teaching poster from Power Pix: First Grade. Students practiced this and "taught" each other. The definition they chant is, "A verb is an action word or a state of being.  (State of being is addressed later.) While they chant, they pump their arms as if they are running.

The next day we reread the book and reviewed "verb."
Then carefully studied the illustrations looking for action words
I wrote these verbs on the anchor chart above.

We reviewed the whole brain definition of verb and our chart each day during morning meeting.

Finally, students are ready for some independent practice.
Here is a booklet to reinforce the concept of verbs using snowmen.

They can also draw simple picture with a white crayon or chalk and write a matching sentence .

Benny's Pennies Project

First lets take a quick look at the book.

Benny has five pennies and buys gifts for his family. Each item is one penny.  This story is a great way to introduce subtraction.

There are also rhyming lines in the story.

This is helpful for reinforcing rhyming concepts.

The H in "thanks" is for my handy husband and Hobby Lobby.

My husband is incredibly handy. He has made name tag holders, bathroom passes and buzzers for my classroom.  

Love these!

Here are thick sturdy bathroom passes that can't be destroyed by little hands.

The buzzer is still in progress.

Needless to say, I am grateful for all the support my husband gives my classroom.

Hobby Lobby

I am super excited that this store opened up close to my home.  It is filled with crafting goodies and is a teacher lifesaver. I have purchased instant snow, construction paper, scrapbooking supplies, paper punches, and today pipe cleaners! 

So convenient for impromptu classroom crafts!

Peanut Butter and Jelly (song) booklet

Remember the peanut butter and jelly song? I remember using it years ago to teach literacy concepts. I thought I might like to use it again! So I made some things to share and use.  First, I made this booklet that has some of the song lyrics.  I also made a slide share that matches the book.
