Thanksgiving activities

Thanksgiving is not supposed to be this fun!!

We had a good time this week with these Thanksgiving activities.

These kids are "tickling their turkeys" with this emergent reader.

Here is a closer look.

Here are some "turkeys" who wanted to show off their head wear!

This was a cut and paste activity where students had to put the turkeys in order by 10's.

This project was my favorite!
It is a variation of K. Miner's turkey project. I used a painted paper plate for the body and added a small tag to his wing.

But were aren't quite done yet...
Come back soon!

Writing Practice for a Turkey and Pilgrim

The class needs practice with handwriting and copying a sentence with finger spacing .  We have been writing sentences this past week. The coloring pages are from K. Miner and DLTK.

We also studied story elements with a thinking map and we used the story T'was the Night Before Thanksgiving.

Solid Figures Activity
This math sort went very well.

Turkeys and Comparing Numbers

We are continuing with addition skills and we did our turkey project to reinforce skills.

We have also been studying whether a number is more or less than another.  I have introduced the greater or less than symbol.  This activity worked really well in reinforcing the correct use of the symbol.  Students made the connection several days later when we did a standard paper and pencil math worksheet.

More Pumpkins!

A large brace map was created for the class for discussion.

This writing activity worked extremely well.  Most of the children understood the concept of writing from the Thinking Map.
I am so proud of these! Students chose their own ending word from the map!

The pumpkin cycle activity...

The two sides of the picture cards are shown.  Students had to match the word to the picture and glue them back to back.

Then the cards fit neatly inside the pumpkin (more or less)!

Addition with Creepy Creatures

I bought several bags of these creatures at the Dollar Tree. First, I asked students to sort and count their creatures.
Then I asked different students to put some of their creatures in the pocket chart. My next step was to demonstrate the beginning concepts of addition.

I even made this worksheet to go with this activity.

What could be more fun than learning addition concepts with creepy creatures?!

Pumpkins, Pumpkins, Pumpkins!

We started by looking at a real pumpkin and talking about what it was like.  We used describing words to create a bubble map.

Then we took those describing words and wrote them on a sticky note and placed them into the Pumpkin Song. This is another of Jump's ideas.

Finally we wrote and drew about pumpkins.

Our Pumpkins Crafts!

More on pumpkins coming soon!

Candy Math

We did a fun math activity yesterday with candy.  We talked about more than,  less than, and graphed. Thanks to Nicole Ricca for creating this worksheet!
